water warning. hammer-yard line is still is hitting offshore and beach-goers have been told to stay on dry land. saying good-bye. the ocean may be off limits but people are still finding ways to enjoy their last summer weekend. it's official. eagles fans have their starting quarterback, and you won't believe where carson wentz got the news. oh, it's the final countdown. just a few hours left of the labor day weekend. a lot of people head to the shore for the holiday but just like hear in avalon, cape may county hermine has affected a lot of people's plans. rest of the shore is hoping to get back to normal soon and in atlantic city some surfers and swimmers returned to the water. there were restrictions. lifeguards would allow people to

go knee to waist deep and many ac businesses are open and are trying their best to attract customers. further south to wildwood cape may county. the boardwalk was crowded with people today, but business owners say it's been a slow weekend. a few people flocked to the beach, but as you can see many people were not stepping foot inside that water. nbc 10 first alert meteorologist sheena par convenient will take a closer look at what happens next with hermine and lauren mayk joins us live now from ocean city with more. lauren? >> reporter: jacqueline, the sun has been peeking in and out today, mostly out, and if you take a look over at the boardwalk you can see that things are starting to thin out. but take a look at the activity we have been watching all day in the water. really big waves. rough surf out there. you know, that and the weather have put a damper on things here at the beach, but it certainly didn't wash away the fun.

on a windy overcast day in ocean city, it's about making the most out of summer's last hurrah. >> trying to soak up, you know, the last and extend summer as much as we can. >> reporter: no sun, no problem. you can still pull out the shades on the boardwalk where some noticed a little more room on this labor day. >> i see a lot of places are empty, and usually it's busier than this. >> reporter: the threat of hermine cut shore some vacations, and cut business in half at the food court. is this usually a big weekend for you? >> yes, yes. we look forward to this weekend, and it was a little disappointing. >> reporter: on the beach a sign warned the water was off limits though we did spot a few in the rough surf. >> what is this? >> a boogie board. >> reporter: this family from philadelphia kept the boards packed up and stuck to the sand. they cancelled their weekend plans and then decided to make the most of one day. >> i said we're going.

let's just pack the bag this morning. >> reporter: soaking up the end of another season. >> we started the summer at the shore, and we're going to end the summer at the shore. >> reporter: i checked with lifeguards here on the beach. they tell me they did have two rescues today, but no major injuries. and as for the weather, you know, i talked to folks here and walked the boardwalk and some say they like it like this. it's not too hospital there's a nice breeze. overall not a bad day to soak up the final moments here at the jersey shore. live in ocean city, i'm lauren mayk, nbc 10 news. and the threat of hermine also scared many people away from the delaware beaches this holiday weekend, and that is not sitting well with business owners who rely on the labor day crowds. >> this is labor day today, and look at it. you know, there's -- there should be twice as many people here. >> reporter: there has been a tiny bit of cleanup at the beaches following the rain and wind this weekend. we caught up with the head of the rehoboth beach patrol this

morning who made the call to ban swimming. most lifeguards will be done for the season starting tomorrow. the impact from the storm could linger for a few more days at the shore. nbc 10 first alert meteorologist sheena par convenient is here now with the latest. sheena? >> yeah, jacqueline, hermine still remaining very far offshore and the newest track continues to mainly bring it up to new england so i think this will mostly be a storm for new england now, but it is expected to weaken and still very far away from us. it will still be increasing our rip currents as we go through tonight and tomorrow. so here's a look at hermine, right. the center is where you see the "l" so it's still very far offshore and notice it's gotten closer. the cloud cover has gotten closer and the rain closer and still offshore and now we're putting it motion. rain bands spinning offshore and staying offshore. cloud cover more into our coastal areas and the delaware beaches today. not so much inland so it has continued to be a nice day inland. we still do have the rip current threat through tuesday evening.

all the jersey shore, delaware beaches, so, again, a dangerous rip current forecast will be staying in effect with rough seas so that's one thing we'll be watching very closely. right now comfortable temperatures. 85 degrees philadelphia and 85 pennsylvania and new jersey seeing cloud cover closer to the shore. lehigh valley looking good and even delaware, temperatures coming in in the mid-80s right now and that's what we're continuing to see through most of the area. temperatures in the mid-80s and staying comfortable tonight. tomorrow though will be another day where temperatures will be just a tad warmer, but some areas could see more in the way of wind so straight ahead we'll talk more about that and also a heat wave in the forecast, too. that's coming up. >> new details in the shooting of an atlantic city police officer. today we learned that officer josh vadell has been recovering nicely and his condition has been released from critical to

stable. the family said i wanted to take an opportunity to thank everyone who played a role in helping us through this extremely difficult time. the individuals who have donated their time and the resources to the comfort of our family as well as the capture of those responsible for this horrific crime. vadell was shot 2:00 saturday morning. he and his partner saw a group of people holding up some people near caesar's parking lot and that's when gunfire broke out and one of the suspects was shot and killed by vadell's partner. the two other men were later arrested and are facing aggravated assault and other charges. a judge could sit bill cosby's trial date during a hearing tomorrow. the actor is expected to appear at the montgomery county courthouse for an investigative hearing. cosby is accused of drugging and molesting a woman in 2004. this is one of the allegations amongst a string of allegations brought by dozens of women.

football is almost back. we are six days away from kickoff, and the eagles have answers the fans' biggest question who will be their starting quarterback? today the team made it official. carson wentz will start week one, and as nbc 10's denise nakano shows, the fans are now looking forward to their team's future. >> i'm just excited that football season is back. >> reporter: eagle season just got clearer over the labor day weekend. >> they made the move quickly, and i think the organization is going to be good for it. >> reporter: and many fans seem thrilled and hopeful about head coach doug pederson's announcement that carson wentz will make the start sunday. >> everybody feels like this kid is ready to go, you know, and we drafted him to take on the reins and something that we're prepared to do. >> reporter: lunch crowd at chicky and pete's in south philadelphia mulled over the mood with mouths full of crabs. >> eating the crab and got our rookie quarterback going in for sunday, can't wait. >> reporter: some making cracks about what it all means for the

our exclusive interview with carson wentz and then it's eagles game day final following "nbc 10 news at 11:00." denies 2016. the two presidential tickets crossed paths today in battleground ohio. the airplanes carrying both nominees and their running mates were parked just steps apart on the tarmac at the cleveland airport. donald trump and vp nominee mike pence surprised diners at a cleveland restaurant. the republicans then sat down with union workers for lunch. trump promised to bring jobs to america by making trade deals with china. hillary clinton and her vp nominee tim kaine stopped at a labor day festival in cleveland. clinton criticized trump's recent trip to mexico calling it an embarrassing international incident. hillary clinton had a bit of a coughing fit during her rally and told the crowd, quote, every time i think about trump i get allergic. meanwhile, one-time primary rival bernie sanders campaigned for clinton on his own for the

first time today. he told voters in new hampshire that the election is about the needs of the american people and that clinton is the best choice. working families from all over the area celebrated a day off at the tri-state labor day parade at penn's landing. the parade started at the sheet metal workers union. the day continued with craft and live music and today is the last day to enjoy roller skating at penn's landing. a live look at the delaware river front for a steady crowd has been enjoying summer fest today and summer fest ends tonight at 11:00, along with skating. there's the lodge for adults, mini golf course and a play area for the kids. and in a couple of months from now this area will be transformed back into an ice skating rink for winterfest.

coming up next at 6:00, rough ride. a cruise ship caught in the middle of hermine is finally back to dry land, and nbc 10 is there to see how the passengers are holding up. another septa slowdown. why passengers are bracing for even more crowds this week and what septa is doing to ease their rise. the world's clean energy super power's either going to be germany, china, or us. and i'm going to make sure it's us. from 500 million solar panels installed by the end of my first term, to precision manufacturing. we'll beat the competition and create new high wage jobs. we can do this, millions of jobs right here in america. that's my plan.

>> some cruise ship passengers are relieved to be back on dry land after a rough ride. this is cell phone video of anthems of the seas following its arrival in bermuda today. the ship left the area on saturday and had to sail around hermine to get to the destination. one passenger saw people getting sick because of the rough conditions. >> it was pretty miserable from the people we woke up. people being thrown from one side of the ship to the other. apparently they are saying it wasn't as bad as it was in february but still not a good excuse. >> as he mentioned back in february that same ship was found in a violent storm and the captain had to reroute the cruise back from the bahamas to the u.s. passengers received full refunds. tomorrow will be a big test for septa and its ride issers.

passengers have dealt withy will days and that's after septa was forced to remove a third of its rail fleet. now it's the end of summer and the start of school. mitch blocker joins us and septa already has some changes in the works for tomorrow. >> starting tomorrow morning there's express bus service . this is the narburth station and they believe they have enough trains to handle the morning and evening commute. >> today at 30th street station one of the passengers was waiting for a last train and this man didn't mind waiting. >> they are doing a good job. >> reporter: considering a full

third of the fleet is sidelined. just before the fourth of july weekend septa pulled more than 100 coaches off the tracks and inspectors found fractures on almost all of the silver-lined cars. work is progressing to replace them but won't be ready until october at the earliest. >> people have to go back to school and work and it's going to be horrible. >> septa now leases 48 cars and starting tomorrow septa and riders anticipate the slowdown since the startup started. >> i hope they ramp up their actual schedule. >> reporter: septa is hoping to ease the commute by running buses between 6:30 and 8:30 a.m. and 4r to 6:00 p.m. at some of its busiest hubs, the chestnut hill and fox chase and manayunk north line are among those with bus service. commute remembers hoping it will

work. >> it might go well or it could go bad, too. all depends on how many people there are. >> since septa pulled more than 1 is hundred cars off of its rails. ridership has decreased according to septa by more than 10%. that combined with the cost of leasing cars to make up for that lack of service, septembera says it's cost them more than $2.5 million. we're live in narbuth tonight, mitch blatcher. >> septa removed 120 of its regional rail cars from service. more than two months ago the agency says it plans to be back on a regular weekday schedule by early october and its full fleet should be back in service by mid-november. >> well, if you're at the shore today or any of our delaware beaches you would have noticed more clouds around and here's a live look out at rehoboth beach and a cloudy labor day.

hermine is out there and the track keeps it off our coastline and becoming a storm for new england where they are starting to see some rain bands from the system and it will be weakening but for us we're still concerned about the rip current threat at the shore. here is a look at the rain from it staying right offshore. the heaviest rain will not be moving in, but as we go through the next 24 to 36 hours the rip current threat is still going to stay high because of that. through tuesday evening high risk of rip currents the entire jersey shore. sussex county beaches, rough surf and if you're going to continue to stay at the surf, keep that in mind. don't want to be swimming with the storm offshore. temperatures 86 degrees and pennsylvania suburbs plenty of sunshine and wilmington and delaware and coming in at 85 and 86 lehigh valley and 79 degrees. many of our south jersey neighborhoods. we'll take a look at the shore now with a pretty good offshore wind at the moment. mays landing 81 degrees and 76

stone harbor and ventner city 79 degrees and the 76 in ho lg ate and with extra cloud cover temperatures staying mostly in the upper 70s. here's future weather so it sees the rain right offshore. tomorrow this system is going to continue to try to move to the north northwest so some of that rain could try to get a little bit closer, but i think for the most part we'll just keep the clouds in the forecast and then wednesday it moves away and we could see a few more showers trying to move into our area mostly from the west. i don't think it's going to be a big deal but maybe a couple of showers around for part of the area. thursday we're going to start to get dryer again. more sunshine for everybody, and that's really going to start to keep temperatures up back into the 90s so you can see that with the seven-day controlling at the bottom of the screen and the 90 has returned. the normal high this time of the year is actually 82 degrees now. today we hit 86 in philadelphia. tomorrow we'll still be around the mid-80s. we'll have a presentee breezy north wind tomorrow so i think temperatures for most us should

be in the mid-80s and some areas in the upper 80s and by wednesday near 90 and thursday and friday about the mid-90s so we're going to feel like summer again. we'll be ten degrees above normal again as we go into the weekend and this weekend so far it looks pretty good. temperatures tomorrow across the area. 84 reading and coming in near the mid to upper 80s with a lot of sunshine and, again, a little breezy in some spots. breeze town shapp 85 degrees. temperatur temperatures there in the mid to low 80s. look at the ten-day forecast coming up. john? >> thank you, sheena, it's now official. rookie carson wentz will start the eagles opener on sunday against the browns. reaction from wentz and head coach doug pederson coming up next in sports. katie: on crime, pat toomey's attacks on me are shameful.
